INGREDIENTS & SUBSTITUTIONS

Air fryer

This air fryer sausage and peppers recipes uses an air fryer as the primary cooking tool. You can bake these or grill these as well but the idea is to use an airy fryer for an easy recipe thats done in only 10 minutes.

Wood skewers for roasting

You will need wooden skewers for this sausage and pepper appetizer. You will need to soak them pior to making this recipe for approx 30 minutes to 1 hour. This is to help ensure the skewers do not burn or catch fire in the air fryer. You want to do it directly before making this recipe, not the night before.

Chicken sausages or Italian sausage

For this recipe you can choose to use chicken sausage or traditional italian sausage. You can choose either sweet italian sausage or spicy depending on your preference. The chicken sausage keeps this appetizer as a healthy option as chicken has less saturated fat.

You can use either pre cooked sausage or raw sausage. The difference will just be the cooking time. For the purposes as this recipe I used raw sausage. If you use precooked sausage it will cook faster and char faster so cook for 5 minutes in the air fryer and then continue to check it every minute to make sure the peppers and onions are not burning.

Bell peppers any color

For these air fryer sausage and peppers you can use any peppers youd like. I prefer to select 2-3 bell peppers in various colors to keep these skewers colorful and fun.

For a spicier option, you can also select 1-2 spicier peppers to give your skewers a kick. You can add jalapenos or chili peppers as well.

To make these skewers even healthier you can increase the amount of peppers used to have a heavier pepper to sausage ratio. You can also add a variety of other vegetables.

You’ll want to chop the peppers up into approx 2″ squares. They should all be the same size so the cook is even.

You can store the slices in the fridge in an air tight container for up to 3 days before grilling.

Zucchini

One of the perks of this recipe is that you can use any vegetables you have and throw them on the skewer as well. I chose to add zucchinifor some extra green nutrients but you can also add yellow zucchini, butternut squash, mushrooms or pineapple for a sweeter flavor.

The zucchini can be prepped ahead of time by chopping into 1/2″ rounds and then cutting in half if needed so the sizes are generally the same as the peppers.

You can store the slices in the fridge in an air tight container for up to 3 days before grilling.
