This hot honey pizza is made on a gluten free crust, smothered with cheese (you can use dairy free if you want!), hot honey ham, arugula and hot honey drizzled on top!.
If you were to ask me what my favorite type of pizza is, I will pick something with arugula every single time. If you were to ask my fiance what his favorite pizza is, he would say some type of meat lovers pizza with hot honey on top. So this hot honey pizza is the best of both worlds.
On Friday nights, instead of ordering pizza in, we like to make pizza. It is REALLY hard to find good gluten free pizza. So on a night that I dont want to risk getting a floppy gluten free pizza from a pizza place I dont know, I opt to make my own!
why you’ll love this recipe
This hot honey pizza is gluten free, has a nut free option and has a dairy free option. This pizza also has a lower carb option and a lower fat option as well!
Easy to make dairy free:
You can easily use any dairy free or vegan cheese instead of the fat free cheese here. I used mozzarella but you can also feel free to use any kind of cheese you might have a home! The key is to make sure that the cheese you use, you like the way it pairs with the hot honey…which to me is almost all cheeses!
Easy to make in the air fryer:
You can make this pizza in the air fryer or in the oven depending on what size and type of crust you use! If you have personal sized pizzas this hot honey pizza is easy to add the cheese to and pop into the air fryer to crisp up quickly!
Easy to make on any type of crusts:
If you don’t have a gluten free pizza crust you like, you can also use gluten free italian heros to make a french bread pizza. This hot honey pizza is super versatile because it is about the toppings. Yes the crust is important, but its important to note that you can put these toppings on anything gluten free you may have at home. You can make pizza toasts, pizza bagels, english muffin pizzas, etc.
Easy to meal prep:
This pizza is super easy to prep ahead of time. I like to make the crust and bake it with the cheese ahead of time when I know I might not have a lot of time to make dinner. Then when it is dinner time its easy to heat up the cheesy base and just add the toppings.
ingredients & substitutions
For this hot honey pizza I used a frozen gluten free pizza crust I got at the grocery store. Most grocery stores have a bunch of gluten free cust options. Whether it be pizza crusts or just frozen pizza dough, feel free to pick whatever your favorite type of crust is.
If you don’t have a gluten free pizza crust you like, you can also use gluten free italian heros to make a french bread pizza! I love a french bread pizza and this is the perfect gluten free sub. You can put these toppings on anything gluten free you may have at home really. You can make pizza toasts, pizza bagels, english muffin pizzas, etc.
The key is to make sure that the cheese you use, you like the way it pairs with the hot honey…which to me is almost all cheeses! I chose to use mozzarella here since it melts nicely and it is a traditional pizza topping. But you can really use any cheese you want!
You can easily use any dairy free or vegan cheese instead of the fat free cheese here. I used mozzarella but you can also feel free to use any kind of cheese you might have a home!
I got this creamy garlic spread from trader joes. Any garlic spread you find in the grocery store would work. If you even find garlic aioli that would be a fantastic sub too. You want something that has the garlic taste and the creamy smooth flavor.
I do not spread the garlic spread all over the pizza. I just add pockets to the crust where its a special bite but I do not use it as a traditional pizza sauce that is spread over the whole crust.
Ham or proscuitto
Choose from: Fresh proscuitto, pan fried crispy proscuitto or pan fried cirspy ham
For this hot honey pizza I used hot honey ham, sliced it and than pan fried it to make the edges crispy. You can do this with any type of ham or even any type of proscuitto.
I usually use proscuitto on pizza when I want a fresher taste. I leave the proscuitto fresh and cold straight out of the package and just lay it on top. When the ham is thicker, like I used here, I like to slice it up into smaller pieces and make it crispy.
No matter what type of meat you use the idea here is you want something thats salty and tasty to give this pizza a fun protein topping.
This hot honey is what gives the hot honey pizza most of its spicy flavor! Its spicy but not overwelming. Its sweet without being too sweet. All in all its the perfect spicy and sweet topping for a fun pizza night at home.
If you don’t have hot honey or cannot find it I like to use a combination of a drizzle of honey and then I add red pepper flakes on top to get still get that spicy and sweet combo!
I love a fresh green topping on my pizza. It gives it a hint of healthiness and adds some extra fiber. I add greens to everything!
You can sub spinach to this if you enjoy spinach more! You can choose to add it on top at the end or add it before baking so its soft and wilted and cooked down. Your choice!
I love a good crunch on top of my pizza and for this hot honey pizza I added pine nuts! They have a nutty but mild flavor. They’re crunchy and a nice little contrast to the soft cheese topping!
Gluten free breadcrumbs
I love a good crunch on top of my pizza and for this hot honey pizza I also added some toasted breadcrumbs for extra texture! I added my breadcrumbs to a frying pan and sauteed them for 4-6 minutes until they were browned and crisp. I waited until the pizza was cooked to add them on top so they didnt get soggy.
taste & texture
This pizza is hot and spicy and warm and gooey. The melted cheese is gooey and warm and makes for a perfect cheese pull. The hot honey on top is spicy and sweet. The pine nuts give the pizza the perfect crunch.
Prepare the crust. Dending on the crust you buy you may need to pre-bake the crust before adding topping.
Next, add the cheese and garlic spread. I like to add the garlic spread in random pools around the crust and not spread all over the crust. Bake the crust until the edges are crispy and the cheese is melted.
Slice the ham and pan fry for 4-6 minutes until the edges are crispy.
Add breadcrumbs to a frying pan and sauteed them for 4-6 minutes until they are browned and crisp.
When the pizza is baked and the cheese is melted remove from oven. Top with ham, pine nuts, breadcrumbs, arugula and drizzle with hot honey.
