what is a hand roll?
Cut-sushi is the type of sushi roll you are most likely used to seeing. Cut-sushi is when the sushi is rolled up and cut into circular slices.
But hand rolls are an easier type of sushi to make at home. Hand rolls are when the rolls are left whole and are not cut into bite-size circular pieces. You start with a slice of crispy seaweed paper, layer a bed of sticky sushi rice on top. Then, you add your desired toppings and fold the edges over making it into an easy cone shape that you can pick up. Hand rolls are just like they sound, perfect to eat with your hands!
ingredients & substitutions
AVOCADO
Avocado has a creamy, buttery flavor. It is also a good source of healthy fats, fiber, and vitamins.
Avocado is a good source of healthy fats, fiber, and vitamins. Healthy fats are important for heart health, brain health, and weight loss. Fiber is important for digestive health. Vitamins are essential for overall health.
HOW TO CHECK IF AN AVOCADO IS RIPE?
You want to lightly squeeze the avocado in your hand. If you can gentle feel it giving and it is a little soft, its likely ripe. The skin should be dark in color.
If the avocado is rock solid hard or green in color it is not ready yet.
If the avocado squeezes easily or is mushy, the avocado is passed its ripeness and you can freeze or save these to use as a hack in baking recipes instead of processed oil!
SEAWEED
Think of seaweed as the taco shell in this lazy sushi recipe. The seaweed is here to hold everything together in this hand roll. You want to get sheets of seaweed paper and cut them into the right size, or buy smaller sheets that are already cut to size! Either option works. You don’t want to get any fresh seaweed or seaweed salad as it will be too soft and fall apart. Look for dried seaweed sheets in the asian aisle of the grocery store.
If you do not like the taste of nori seaweed, you can substitute it with other types of seaweed, such as kombu or hijiki. You can also substitute it with a thin sheet of toasted bread.
TUNA
Tuna has a mild, slightly fishy flavor. It is also a good source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Tuna is a good source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for heart health, brain health, and immune function.
If you do not like tuna, you can substitute salmon, mackerel, or another type of fatty fish. I used canned tuna but you can use raw sushi grade tuna as well. You can also substitute shrimp.
You can also substitute tofu or tempeh for a vegan lazy sushi option.
STICKY RICE
The last part of this lazy sushi roll equation is the sticky rice! The sticky rice, in my opinion, is the best part. The rice is soft and fluffy and sticky. It tastes great on its own with salt and pepper on top. But for this recipe if you do not have sticky rice, regular white rice is a good substitute. It will not stick together the same way but it will taste the closest, just a bit messier.
SPICY MAYO
Spicy mayo is a popular dipping sauce for sushi, sashimi, and other Japanese dishes. It is made with mayonnaise, sriracha hot sauce, and sometimes other ingredients, such as lime juice or sesame oil.
To make your own spicy mayo at home, you will need 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons sriracha hot sauce, 1 tablespoon lime juice (optional) and 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional).
Coconut aminos
Coconut aminos is a gluten-free, soy-free alternative to soy sauce. It has a salty, umami flavor that is similar to soy sauce. Coconut aminos is a good source of amino acids, minerals, and antioxidants. It is also low in sodium.
If you cannot find coconut aminos, you can substitute soy sauce or gluten free soy sauce, tamari, or liquid aminos.
taste & texture
Lazy sushi handrolls are a delicious and satisfying snack or meal. The seaweed paper has a salty, umami flavor that is essential to the taste of sushi. It also has a slightly chewy texture. The tuna has a mild, slightly fishy flavor, and the avocado has a creamy, buttery flavor. The spicy mayonnaise adds a tangy, spicy flavor that complements the other ingredients. The Japanese seasoning and coconut aminos add a salty, sweet, and umami flavor. The overall taste is umami, savory, and slightly spicy. The texture is chewy from the seaweed paper, creamy from the avocado, and smooth from the spicy mayonnaise.
