After going gluten free, some days I just miss being able to order a burger or a chicken sandwich at a bar. They always have such good bar toppings and I love sandwiches and finger food out at a restaurant. The only way to get this type of burger was to make it at home! I mastered this gluten free spicy chicken burger at home by making the chicken burgers from scratch in the air fryer!
This spicy chicken burger is gluten free and can be made dairy free! The burgers are made in the air fryer so you don’t even need a grill. Air fryer recipes also create minimal mess so clean up is extra easy…which is just how I like it!
I hate doing dishes! Recipes that use only minimal dishes are ideal for easy gluten free weeknight dinners so there is less clean up, just like this slow cooker chicken satay and this black pepper chicken recipe.
why you’ll love this allergy friendly recipe
- This gluten free spicy chicken burger is perfect to prepare ahead of time. I love to make the burgers and save some to eat immediately and freeze some. That way when I need an easy dinner I can just pull a burger out and make a fresh sandwich!
- You can meal prep these burgers in individual airtight containers so you just need to pull one out of the fridge for an easy on the go lunch! The burgers can just be heated up quick in the microwave. I love doing this if I’m in the office!
- For an easy low carb burger bowl, I make this exact recipe but leave off the bun!
- This chicken burger is a great alternative to a beef burger! Especially if you don’t like beef or if you want to keep it light! Chicken is my favorite protein so a chicken burger is my go to!
- These spicy chicken burgers cook quickly in the air fryer!
- Chicken burgers are a great summer recipe and perfect on the grill if you are having a BBQ or friends over! Whenever my husband and I make these for a summer BBQ they are such a hit!
- You can cook these spicy chicken burgers on the stovetop or on a grill if you do not have an air fryer!
- These chicken burgers are a great blank canvas. You can add your own toppings and dress them up any way you want! I love adding extra veggies on top!
ingredients & substitutions
Ground chicken: To keep these burgers light and eat to meal prep I used ground chicken. Ground turkey is also a great substitution here.
Eggs: These are to hold the spicy chicken burgers together and keep their shape. Eggs also make sure your burger is moist. I definitely hate burgers that are dry and falling apart.
Pickled jalapeños: The pickled jalapenos give the spicy chicken burger its flavor and spicy. I also recommend using fresh jalapeños if that is what you have instead! Poblano peppers are a great option as well for adding more taste but less spice! Make sure your jalapeños are chopped finely so you get a little bit in each bite! Save some for the topping as well!
Mozzarella cheese: This gives the chicken burger a cheesy flavor without adding cheese on top! This way the cheese is baked in. Its ooey, gooey and melted in every bite! I use mozzarella but cheddar or pepper jack work great too for a spicy burger! I suggest shredded cheese or cutting up a block of cheese into small cubes. For a dairy free recipe I use dairy free cheese.

expert tips & tricks
- Make the gluten free spicy chicken burger as spicy as you want by adding more or less jalapeños!
- Switch it up and use different toppings or different sauces every time you make it!
- To make sure this recipe is gluten free, I serve on a gluten free bun! This would also be great as a gluten free burger bowl without the bun and with extra lettuce.
serving, storing and meal prepping
I store leftover spicy chicken burgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
To freeze leftovers, I form patties and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Then I freeze until solid. I transfer to an airtight freezer bag for up to 3 months. Let cooked burgers cool completely before placing them in an airtight freezer bag. They can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.
To reheat, I add cooked spicy chicken burgers to the microwave. I cover them with a damp paper towel to prevent drying and warm until the burger is hot in the center.
I have also reheated the burgers on a baking sheet and warm in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) until heated through.
Feel free to also quickly reheat burgers in a skillet over medium heat with a little oil.
