expert tips & tricks
- For a richer flavor, use cubed ham instead of slices and sprinkle it over the rolls before adding the egg mixture.
- If your rolls are on the dry side, soak them in a little bit of milk before adding them to the baking dish. This will help them absorb the egg mixture and become soft.
- Feel free to add other vegetables to the mix, like chopped red bell pepper, chopped green pepper, onions, or spinach. Saute them lightly before adding them to the baking dish.
- Top the cheese egg bake with sour cream, green onions or hot sauce for more flavor!
- Create a crust on the bottom of the casserole dish by adding room temperature or thawed tater tots or hash browns. Mash into a smooth layer. Spray with cooking spray and bake on 350 for 20 minutes before adding the remaining ingredients to create this tater tot breakfast casserole.
- Serve the cheese breakfast casserole recipe with a side dish of fresh fruit.
recipe variations
- To make this great recipe low carb is by skipping the gluten free rolls and adding cauliflower based tater tots instead!
- The perfect way to make this Egg Bake With Ham a low fat recipe use fat free or low fat cheese on top. You can even omit the cheese all together.
- My favorite way to make this a vegan recipe use a vegan liquid egg option and skip the ham. Substitute the cheese with vegan shreds.
serving, storing and meal prepping
Let the egg bake cool slightly before serving. Slice it into squares and enjoy it warm. You can store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container or cover the breakfast bake with aluminum foil for up to 3 days. The next morning, a great way to reheat slices is in the microwave or oven.
To freeze, cool the Egg Bake With Ham completely, then slice and wrap portions in foil or plastic wrap. Frozen slices will last for 2-3 months. Reheat slices in the microwave or oven until heated through.
For meal prep, assemble the egg bake in a muffin tin instead of a baking dish. Bake individual portions according to recipe instructions, adjusting the baking time slightly if needed. Freeze cooled portions of the Egg Bake With Ham for grab-and-go breakfasts.
