why you’ll love this recipe
If you have a sweet tooth like mine… you’ll love these dairy free brownies. This dairy free brownie hack is a healthier option since the focus of this recipe is using applesauce insead of oil! These dairy free brownies are gluten free and use no butter or oil or any other dairy.
I could eat gooey chocolate brownies right out of the oven basically every day of the week. I like them warm and just baked, or even popped back in the microwave at night as a healthy dessert. These dairy free brownies are thick, moist and chewy. They are packed with chocolate and sweetness and are the perfect healthy desert.
These dairy free brownies are a SUPER easy, dairy free and gluten free dessert to make. Just add all the ingredients to a bowl, mix it up, pour it into a parchment lined 9×9 pan, and bake!
These brownies are great for anyone who is lactose intolerant or watching their fat intake. In addition to being dairy free, these brownies are also low fat since we removed the oil from them! There will still be some fat content since most boxed mixes use eggs but you are cutting back on so much saturated fat but eliminating the oil.
What is a hack?
A hack is not a full recipe, its a change you can make to a current recipe in order to make it healthier. For this recipe the change is substituting applesauce or mashed bananas instead of oil. This makes them lower in fat and an all around healthier option with some hidden fruit inside!
The idea here is to follow the boxed brownie mix recipe but to use applesauce (or mashed bananas) instead of oil. Whatever eggs or water the boxed mix calls for, follow it. Whatever oil the recipe calls for, substitute it for the same amount of apple sauce.
ingredients & substitutions
These dairy free brownies calls for a gluten free and dairy free brownie mix. It uses a boxed mix as the base for the recipe and then a healthy hack to make it even easier. I like to use king arthurs brownie mix. Partake also has a brownie mix that is gluten free and dairy free. You can use any mix you want but these are the ones that I have successfully used.
If you are not gluten free you can use any brownie mix you have. If you do not have brownie mix you can also use cake mix! The bars will be more cake-like and fluffier but still will satisfy your sweet tooth chocolate craving.
Here are some of my favorite gluten free dairy free brownie mixes to use this hack with:

These dairy free brownies use applesauce instead of oil! That’s right! This is a zero oil recipe!! Its the perfect way to cut back on fat and make these brownies light, airy and cake-like. Applesauce is fat free. You can also get sugar free applesauce to reduce the amount of sugar in these dairy free brownies. Store bought is fine and if you do not have it you can make your own applesauce at home. The idea is to add moisture to the recipe.
If you dont like applesauce or dont have applesauce, you can substitute any mashed fruit including bananas, pumpkin or sweet potato. Mashed bananas are also a great sub for oil. They still keep moisture in the recipe but without all the fat from oil.
Most boxed brownie mixes call for eggs. Feel free to make it your own and try an egg substitute! Just follow the boxed mix amount of eggs it suggests!
Another option you have is to use ground flaxseed as an egg substitue. You can also try fat free greek yogurt, vegan yogurt or mashed bananas!
taste & texture
These dairy free brownies are dairy free and gluten free bread but taste exactly like traditional chocolate brownies! The texture is slightly more cake-like light and fluffy than regular dense brownies. They’re filled with a chocolate cocoa flavor and are the best warm right out of the oven! For a warm snack, you can heat up these brownies in the microwave for 30 seconds before serving.
how to make
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix. Additionally, you can add any berries, extra chocolate or nuts at this time.
Line a 9×9 baking dish with parchment paper. This is a way to make sure clean up is easy and the brownies will easily be removed from the pan. Add the batter to the 9×9 lined pan and bake for 20-30 minutes on 350.
expert tips & tricks

Also, you can slice the Dairy free, gluten free banana bread from pancake mix in half and add butter or vegan butter before serving.
What kind of applesauce should I buy?
You can use any type of applesauce for this recipe. Feel free to use cinnamon flavored applesauce, plain applesauce, no sugar added applesauce, strawberry applesauce, strawberry banana applesauce or organic applesauce. All applesauces work the same way!
How to make these healthier
To make these healthier you can substitute egg whites instead of eggs! Two egg whites are equal to 1 egg.
How to I make a reduced sugar version?
Looking to consume less sugar? Be sure to use sugar free or no sugar added applesauce. The brownie mix already has sugar added to it, you don’t need to add any more by using applesauce. If you can’t find sugar free applesauce you can make your own, or use mashed banas instead.
How ripe should my bananas be?
The riper the better!! I like to use bananas when theyre turning brown, or once they’ve already turned fully brown. This way they are sweeter! If a banana has already turned partially or fully brown but youre not ready to make this bread yet, you can throw them in the freezer and keep them for up to 2-3 months until you are ready to make this! Once you’re ready, let the bananas thaw by sitting out for 2-3 hours on a papertowel to absorb the moisture from defrosting, or else it will make a mess! Also, once the banana thaws it will be a mushy texture which is actually perfect for this recipe!
how to serve & store
You can store these Dairy free brownies in the fridge for up to 3 days in an air tight container. Do not store on counter. Must refridgerate.
