This caramelized onion pizza is gluten free, nut free, has a vegan option and has a dairy free option. I’ve been creating gluten free, dairy free and nut free recipes for years and this one is hands down one of my favorites! In the begining, it was so hard to find recipes that cater to more than one food allergy or restriction. After that, making sure every single one of my recipes cater to people with multiple dietary restrictions and/or food allergies was so important to me!
This onion pizza is packed with lots of gooey, melted cheese, creamy garlic and caramelized onion served on a gluten free crust. I love any pizza that skips the red sauce and especially one that uses extra garlic too. So this is a favorite of mine. This onion pizza is exactly what the name implies, white pizza topped with browned and warm caramelized onions. It’s simple, easy and filled with that delicious caramelized onion flavor. This onion pizza is perfect for a pizza night.
This pizza takes approximately 30 minutes to make and will be your new favorite pizza for pizza night! Slice into small appetizer slices for your next party. I love doing that with all kinds of gluten free pizzas, especially my gluten free bruschetta pizza and my gluten free gouda and spinach flatbread.

ingredients & substitutions
- Gluten-free pizza crust: This is the base of the delicious pizza. You can use any store-bought pizza dough, pre made pizza crust or make your own gluten-free homemade pizza dough.
- Mozzarella cheese: This is a classic pizza cheese. You can substitute with any shredded cheese you like, such as provolone, Monterey Jack, or a cheddar cheese blend. I like to use a dairy free mozzarella cheese for a dairy free recipe.
- White cheddar cheese with parsley and chives: This adds a bit of sharpness and herb flavor to the onion pizza. You can use regular white cheddar cheese or any other flavored shredded cheese you prefer. Mozzarella, blue cheese, feta cheese or provolone would also work. Use more dairy free cheese for the dairy free recipe. Add fresh herbs on top.
- Ricotta cheese: This adds a creamy texture and a mild flavor to the white pie base. You can substitute with cottage cheese, mascarpone cheese, or leave it out entirely if desired. Use dairy free ricotta for the dairy free recipe. This recipe skips the tomato sauce and the ricotta acts like a creamy sauce.
- White onions or sweet onions: This is the key flavor in this pizza. You can use yellow onion or red onions instead, but the white onion will be sweeter.
- Butter: This is used to cook the onions. You can substitute with olive oil or another cooking fat. I like to use dairy free or vegan butter for a dairy free recipe.
taste & texture
This pizza offers a balance of creamy and slightly sweet flavors. The caramelized onions add a touch of sweetness and a soft, almost jammy texture. The ricotta cheese provides a creamy layer, while the mozzarella and cheddar cheeses bring a salty and slightly tangy taste. The pre-made crust is likely crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.

expert tips & tricks
- You can adjust the amount of cheese and toppings to your preference for this pizza recipe.
- For a stronger garlic flavor, consider adding minced garlic along with the onions during caramelization.
- If using a store-bought crust, check the package instructions for pre-baking requirements.
- Use a pizza stone or pizza pan for the best results. You can also use a regular baking sheet or sheet pans with parchment paper as well.
- Top with any fresh herb you enjoy like fresh thyme, fresh rosemary, fresh basil or fresh parsley. You can also season with black pepper, flaky sea salt and a little bit of olive oil.
- To make sweet caramelized onions add a bit of brown sugar in with the onions while they are cooking with the butter.
- For a different onion pizza twist top with your favorite pizza toppings such as with sun-dried tomatoes, green onions, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, parmesan cheese or red peppers!
how to serve, store and meal prep
Slice and Serve: Once the onion pizza is golden brown and bubbly, take it out of the oven and slice it into wedges. Enjoy it hot!
Refrigerate Leftovers: Let the pizza cool completely. Store leftover pizza night slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Enjoy it the next day or for up to 2 days.
Freeze for Later: Allow the pizza to cool completely. Wrap leftover slices tightly in plastic wrap or store them in a freezer-safe container. Frozen pizza will keep for up to 3 months.
Reheat in the Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Wrap leftover slices in foil and reheat for 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through. This is my favorite option because the edges of the pizza will still be crispy!
Reheat in the Microwave: Reheat individual slices of the onion pizza on medium power for 30-60 seconds, or until warmed through (be careful not to overheat). This is the quickest option.
Meal Prep: Prepare multiple pizzas and freeze them in individual portions. Label and date the slices for easy grabbing and reheating for quick lunches or dinners.
