why you’ll love this recipe
I always get nervous during the holidays because of my dietary restrictions. So I came up with this really fun sweet potato casserole (dairy free!). The first time I faced a Thanksgiving after learning I had the celiac gene and was lactose intolerance was really scary. I didn’t want to miss out on my favorite holiday dishes but I also wasn’t 100% sure how to make them in a safe way. This sweet potato casserole (dairy free!) was the perfect recipe that didn’t need a lot of alertations for me to be able to enjoy safely.
On a personal note
Thankfully, my family and I have gotten better at adjusting traditional holiday recipes to be gluten free and dairy free. At this point, basically all our holiday meals have crossed over to fully gluten free and dairy free and I’ve learned that even though there is some time to be put into thinking through the recipes swaps we need to make, no one ever needs to miss out on the traditional holiday dishes.
ingredients & substitutions
- Sweet potatoes – I use 2-3 large sweet poatotes here. You can also used canned sweet potato chunks and mash them up as well. This will not end up with the freshest casserole flavor but sometimes its the cheaper or easier option and thats okay!
- Oat milk – To make this recipe dairy free or vegan I used oat milk here. It is the thickest and creamiest of the dairy free milks. This helps make it the perfect option for a creamy casserole.
- Coconut milk – This casserole recipe uses coconut milk as an even thicker option than oat milk to make sure this recipe is the creamiest of the creamy! You really want to acheive that thick, potato base and its hard to acheive with a thin, watered down milk.
- Cauce from a can of chipotle chiles – This sauce gives the dairy free sweet potato casserole its savory and spicy flavor! It is not TOO spicy but just a nice spicy kick to offset the sweetness of the sugar, maple and marshmallows.
- Maple syrup – Maple syrup is used in the dairy free sweet potato casserole to sweeten up the dish and off set the spicy sauce. Maple syrup is paired with the brown sugar to create the sweetness of this sweet and spicy recipe. You can sub a sugar free maple syrup here if you want!
- Brown sugar – You can use brown sugar or a sugar free substitute here but you want to make sure you add some sugar to this recipe to create the sweetness of this sweet and spicy dish.
- Mini marshmallows – These are for the topping and are added at the end of baking. They create a fun marshallow layer on top.
- Cinnamon

can I use another potato?
This is a sweet potato casserole so the main ingredient here is of course, sweet potatoes! Obviously you can adjust this with any other mashed potato choice but the flavor will change. If you’ve never had this casserole before I would 100% suggest trying it with the sweet potatoes first. They are sweet and creamy and set the perfect base!

Instead of using full fat coconut milk here you can use fat free or lower fat coconut milk OR you can just use all oat milk instead. Coconut milk does have a lot of saturated fat in it so if you are trying to be healthier feel free to skip it!
