When I was a kid, french toast was such a treat! Breakfasts before school consisted mainly of toaster waffles, toaster partries or some cereal…but on the weekends when we got french toast, it was the best day ever. I can honestly still smell the french toast cooking while I write this. French toast will always be so nostalgic to me and have a special place in my heart. As an adult now, who is gluten free and dairy free, it was about time I created a recipe for a Gluten Free Dairy Free French Toast that tasted just like the one from when I was a kid.
This easy, gluten free dairy free french toast recipe is made with your choice of dairy free milk (I like oat milk!) and eggs! Then, it’s topped with fresh berries and dairy free whipped cream to create the perfect weekend breakfast recipe.

ingredients & substitutions
Slices of bread: Use 2 thick slices of your favorite gluten-free bread or any type of bread. My favorite bread to use is canyon bakehouse gluten free white bread or the gluten free bread from trader joes.
Egg: One large egg binds the french toast and adds protein. For a lower-fat option, I use egg whites. They both create a great texture.
Oat Milk: You can use any plant-based milk like soy milk, light coconut milk or almond milk. I prefer oat milk because its thick and creamy. But make sure you are using a dairy free milk for a dairy free french toast recipe.
Vegan Butter: Melts in the pan for cooking. Any cooking oil works or olive oil. I use vegan butter instead of regular butter for this recipe!
Raspberries: This is my favorite topping for my Gluten Free Dairy Free French Toast. The raspberries add bursts of sweetness and tang. Fresh blueberries, strawberries, or a mix work too. Mash half, keep the rest whole.

Step 2
Heat the pan: Melt the vegan butter or coconut oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat to medium high heat. Make sure the pan is hot enough to sizzle a drop of water before proceeding. Option to spray skillet with oil spray instead of butter.

Spread the mashed raspberries evenly onto one slice of the Gluten Free Dairy Free French Toast. Top with whole raspberries or fresh berries.
expert tips & tricks
- Use ripe but firm berries for best results. Softer berries might break down too much during mashing.
- If your coconut cream is not already whipped, whip it with an electric mixer until light and fluffy before using.
- This Gluten Free Dairy Free French Toast recipe can easily be doubled or tripled if feeding a crowd.
- Serve the dairy free french toast recipe with melted vegan butter on top and a drizzle of maple syrup or blueberry syrup for a fun twist. You can also top the dairy free french toast recipe with peanut butter, fresh fruit, a little brown sugar or coconut sugar.
how to serve, store and meal prep
I like to serve my Gluten Free Dairy Free French Toast warm, drizzled with maple syrup or sprinkle of confectioner sugar. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days in an airtight container. For longer storage, I wrap the Easy Dairy Free French Toast slices tightly in plastic wrap and freeze for up to a month. I add my toppings only once I am ready to eat.
Reheating is simple! I just pop individual slices of the Gluten Free Dairy Free French Toast in the microwave at low power for about 30 seconds, checking frequently to avoid sogginess.
