INGREDIENTS & SUBSTITUTIONS

blueberries

BLUEBERRIES

This healthy berry crumble recipe is the perfect healthy apple treat. The bluebrries are sweet and the insides are smooth and warm and ooze blueberry flavor!

But, if you dont LOVE blueberries the way that I do, you can use any type of fruit. You can swap out the blueberries for apples, peaches, pears or plumbs! Stay tuned for those recipes coming soon!

LEMON JUICE

CORNSTARCH

This is used to thicken the blueberry juice that oozes out when the blueberries get warm and bake! If you don’t have cornstartch you can use gluten free flour too.

GRANOLA

What makes this healthy berry crumble actually healthy, is that it skips the normal crispy crumble topping of flour + butter. Butter has a lot of saturated fat so sometimes looking for a healthier option. This blueberry crisp is topped with granola instead. I buy gluten free granola and to keep this a gluten free recipe you must buy gluten free granola.

You can buy any flavor gluten free granola you want. You can buy gluten free cinnamon granola, plain granola, honey flavored granola, etc. If you really want an upgrade use vanilla granola or pumpkin spice granola! Feel free to use vegan granola too if you want to keep this recipe vegan!

SUGAR FREE MAPLE SYRUP

I use sugar free maple syrup as a sweetener for the healthy berry crumble, but you can use any type of sweetener you want. If you want to sub honey instead of maple syrup or vegan honey instead!

CINNAMON + PUMPKIN SPICE

A classic flavor in all crumbles or crisps is cinnamon. This recipe also calls for pumpkin spice as an upgrade to the classic flavor. If you like pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin bread and all fall flavors, you’ll love this version.

COOL WHIP

Instead of topping this healthy berry crumble with a scoop of ice cream, I used cool whip! Its lower in fat and a lighter, healthier option while still getting that creamy flavor. You can use a low fat, lite or fat free cool whip for a lighter option. You can also use a dairy free cool whip or a coconut whip on top instead to keep it vegan!
